Aside from providing clean treated water for the communities, the project was also a solution to the Cholera outbreak in 2008. Pohnpei Department of Health treated over 3000 cases of cholera resulting in at least 19 deaths. As a result of the recent cholera outbreak on Pohnpei, the Office of the Governor requested assistance from the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) of the United States Department of Interior (DOI) to develop recommendations for infrastructure improvements and other interventions to prevent future outbreak of diseases. The project is a component of the recommendation by Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in addressing priority infrastructure projects to address the public health impact.
